Falconbridge Ltd. has resumed production at its Sudbury nickel mine, which has been paralysed by a strike by workers for the last two months.
Managers and contract workers are on the job at the Fraser Mine. Company spokesperson Craig Crosby said 2,000 tons of ore have been produced since work started last week.
About 1,260 unionized workers have been off the job since Aug.1, after talks with the company broke down. The company has called for a decrease in the number of union representatives, while workers want the company to stop replacing retiring unionized workers with contract staff.
Union members are "not overly concerned" about the mining because the company isn't producing enough to threaten union jobs, said Canadian Auto Workers/Mine Mill Local 598 President Rolly Gauthier
